During the summer pr publications class I learned how to design a brochure which was a great experience. Although I am not yet a pro a designing a brochure, including designing a brochure I feel more confident about the process. There are many types of brochures and many things that go into the design of a brochure. You must first think about your client. Who you client is play a great role in determining the type brochure you will create. A brochure most likely will represent your clients and or something special your client has to offer. A brochure is a folder with high quality design and production technique. It offers a client a creative way to display who they are to several people. A brochure can be mailed, strategically placed or handed out face-to-face.
When designing a brochure you must think about you CRAP, which are Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. You want to create something visually innovative and captivating that best represents your client. Through proper art and picture placement you have the ability to add visual density to your text. You always have to consider type of font and the placement of the font in relation to your art. Once you have a good layout you must find a good printer and chose a quality paper. At the end of your design process you should have created a publication that effectively represents your client and its message.

What is a font? A font is a complete character set of a single size and style of a particular typeface, (Wikipedia), or simply, a design for a set of characters. A font is the combination of typeface and other qualities, such as size, pitch, and spacing. For example, Times Roman is a typeface that defines the shape of each character (webopedia). To most of us, font has a more simple definition. Font is just the way the letters look and for publication design that is very important. A look holds a lot of weight to something we design. In typography, we try to produce a look that evokes some sort of feeling or action and font plays a big role in that. Fonts can create feeling and flow and represent the message. For example, if I wanted to create something formal and elegant I may try using the Edwardian Script ITC font instead of the Chiller font.
According to Wikipedia, Typography is the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). [1] Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, and clerical workers. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users.
When a designer creates something, much thought goes into the typography they will use because it is such an integral part of the design of the final piece. A designer must also factor in which typography goes best with what product they are trying to produce. The typography for a business card will probably be different from that of a webpage, flyer or brochure. The must consider what goes with the theme or creates the theme they want to generate.
Here are some font tips that are considered best for business card and brochures:
For a brochure:
• A serif font of 9 to 14 points is best for the body of text
• The name of the customer should be in a font anywhere from 12-15 points
• The title should be about 20% bigger than the rest of the font
For at business card:
• Try to make all you font 8 points of larger
• Make your name and contact information 9-11 point

CRAP: Repetition

repetition CRAP which stands for, contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity, is an acronym for design created by Robin Williams. Robin Williams is the author of the helpful guide book to web design principals called “The Non- Designer’s Web Book”. I would like to highlight the repetition principal.
Repetition is rhythm produced by repeating color, line, form, etc (“strategic publications, designing for target publics” Morton, 2006). Many things come into play when you design a publication whether it is web or print. You must create visual readability. Visual readability is defined as the ease with which readers take in a publication page or the ability to merge and design text and art in a cohesive, creative and compelling way. Think of it this way, anything created and published can become art to the eye evoking intended or unintended feelings, emotions or actions. When you implement repetition you create as sense of continuity and rhythm by doing things repeatedly and consistently. Similar to the beat in your favorite song, repetition in design creates visual rhythm by using the same lines, fonts, colors, pictures and form. When you use the same type of elements the reader’s eye easily cascades across your publication. Using repetition, the reader’s eye is escorted across the publication in a way that becomes familiar and harmonious. For example, when a designer uses the same color throughout the publication the piece becomes one cohesive unit. If you were designing something for Georgia Southern University, let’s say, and decided to use the school colors you would want to stick with those colors throughout the whole publication to give the reader as sense of uniformity. The same goes with art work, you want to use the same type of art work or idea to ensure that your publication flows together and the reader becomes used to the pattern and rhythm. Repetition is a very important aspect of publication design and is key to keeping your theme going throughout your publication.

As this summers has progressed i found myself more private and less willing to be open to others about who I am. Ive found observation the best method of learning rather than sharing with others. Although I love to learn about others and them about me, I found myself being judged and even ridiculed (not by fellow students either). Perhaps I should know more than I do, perhaps I should have retained more of my life experiences and perhaps I shouldv’e continued on the tradiational road I was on 10 years ago but I have to stop beating myself and letting others beat me up about taking another avenue. Although I look back and see my mistakes in living color I also apreciate my struggle and the lessons that have come from this journey. It is increasingy frustrating and depressing that I no longer have the opportunities that I once had and that I find myself running around like a chicken with its head cut off looking for new opportunities but I feel like some how some way a new path with new opportunities will open up to me. I am trying to be optimistic and enthusiastic about the future and implent the power of postive thought. I wonder is it this as hard for others or is it just me? I ponder, what’s the point? I contemplate the reality that this is no longer the world of networking and connection but of indirect tweets and blog surfing and wonder where I fit into this new world. I have come to the conclusion that this may very well be my “on the job training”. One of the greatest gifts that has come of this whole experience is gaining knowledge of self. I know who I am and can honestly say I am proud of the person I have become. During my summer pr publications class I learned the art of alignment, the layout of items along invisible but easily identified lines which means way more to me this summer than design publications. My life has aligned with God’s plan and put exactly where i need to be at this very moment. There are invisible but identified lines of life that situations have aligned me with to create a beautiful design, me.

segmenting publics

During the summer semester we have talked at great length about how important connecting with your desired public is which has lead me to take notice of what type of publics are around me here in Statesboro. For my organization I had to think long and hard about what was the best approach to connect with a potential audience. I had to determine who the mass audience in the Statesboro area was and then I had to narrow down my objectives and focus on my target market. I started by determining the different types of public characteristics and began the process of segmenting my target audience so I could produce a more effective brochure.
By completing the segmentation group project in class I was a bit more aware about the different demographics that lead to psychographics and sociographics segmentation. I determined that to create the best brochure I would need to market to a segment opposite of myself and try and make my brochure connect with the public in an emotional manner. I need to be able to effectively use segmentation to connect with my target audience, while exposing them in a creative way to important information. For my brochure I plan to use information that seems most likely to inform and effect my target segment emotionally hopefully making them more aware and willing to give back to the community around them. By learning about just how public relations segmentation works during class I feel like I have a good chance of reaching people and making a difference in this community and in the lives of others.

News University–Language of the image

84934596At first, I was unclear of what I was actually doing. I was prepared for a traditional online class, you know the ones that give information in paragraph form then ask you multiple choice questions about it. However after several minutes (about 33 to be exact) I realized that I the goal was to learn from the photos and how they are used. I found this technique very effective and refreshing. I learned how important images and photography are to everything especially a story. Being a visual learner, I was surprised how much goes into the review of a photo. I can appreciate a good photo and recognize its power and impact but I was surprised at all the criteria used to establish value and characteristics of photos. There are many more things I would like to learn about in regards to photography. I would love to learn how a photographer distinguishes what moments will most impactful in a photograph, especially with limited time and split second decision making. What love to learn how to not only take photographs but analyze the many facets of the picture and be able to use it to fulfill my objective. For example, I would love to learn what type of photos I can use connect most with people in my target demographics when I am creating a layout for an advertisement. I would also love to learn how to direct a photo shoot, layout or situation to be able to set the right environment to create high quality, artful and effective photos.
